The Premier Performance Venue for the Southwest
Route 66 Casino Hotel set out to build the best theater in the southwest: a performance venue that offered an exceptional experience and could host a range of events from concerts to corporate events. The property had hosted live shows, gaming events, and corporate gatherings for years. Now, the vision was to create a completely self-contained theater with production-grade technology capable of hosting concerts, boxing matches, game shows, and all-hands corporate events. All while giving top-tier performers the flexibility to integrate their own sound, lighting, and video systems.
Building on years of trust earned through successful collaborations across the property’s casino floor, sportsbook, restaurants, and back of house systems, Route 66 Casino turned to Alpha to make this vision real.
The Challenge
Route 66’s vision for Legends Theater extended beyond hosting events—the property wanted to establish itself as the region’s premier performance destination, capable of independently supporting any event type while remaining completely flexible for touring acts to accommodate their own setup.
The technical challenge was to design one unified system that could operate as a fully self-contained production environment yet remain transparent enough to allow artists to plug in their own sound, lighting, and video systems that meet the technical requirements of national tours.
The Alpha Approach
Alpha designed a fully all-digital architecture using Dante audio and NDI video, paired with comprehensive control systems that could be customized for each event type.
The solution unified stage lighting, audio playback and mixing, video display, live production, green-room communications, and back-of-house operations into a single controllable environment. By handling both design and build, Alpha delivered time savings that eliminated delays and freed Route 66 to focus on opening the venue on schedule.

The guest experience begins at the LED video wall marquee, custom-fitted to the theater entrance. Inside, the 2,962-seat main hall features a 28-foot-wide Primeview LED video wall as the primary stage backdrop, flanked by two 16′ × 19′ IMAX screens for close-ups and graphics.
The full video chain includes a Panasonic PTZ camera system for live production, a Vizrt TriCaster for live mixing and switching, and NDI video distribution, enabling any connected display or remote production point to access event feeds in real time.
Audio and Stage Sound
Meyer Sound PANTHER speaker arrays deliver performance audio across the main stage. The system includes a Yamaha DM7 mixer at front-of-house, all-digital Dante audio networking for routing and processing, and QSC control systems for back-of-house and ambient sound in green rooms and support spaces.
The fully networked architecture allows performers to plug in their own mixing consoles and audio feeds while Route 66 maintains complete house audio capability for events using venue equipment only.
Lighting and Stage Control
A Vari-Lite programmable LED lighting system provides full DMX control for stage lighting rigs and house lighting. Applied Electronics motor control systems manage moving trusses and equipment rigging. LEX stage power systems and company switches provide safe, distributed electrical distribution across the stage.
Communications and Show Operations
An RTS intercom system connects stage managers, lighting operators, audio engineers, and green room staff. Scala digital signage drives pre-show graphics, menu boards, and operational messaging. Q-SYS touch panels in green rooms and dressing areas give artists direct control over their local audio and video feeds.
Venue Integration and Control
All systems operate on a centralized architecture, allowing Route 66 operations staff to pre-program shows, adjust settings by zone, and hand over control points to visiting production teams as needed. The design enables touring acts to use their own lighting, sound, and video boards while remaining fully integrated into the venue’s infrastructure.
Why Alpha Was the Right Partner
Route 66 had worked with Alpha across multiple property renovations and upgrades. But Legends Theater was different in scope and technical complexity.
“No place else comes close to matching Legends Theater’s size, flexibility, state-of-the-art technology, and year-round utility,” says Lance Hutchinson, VP at Alpha.
“The breadth of our internal capabilities and partner resources made Alpha the right partner,” Hutchinson explains. Working with partners I-5 Design Build and Integrated Lighting Systems, Alpha oversaw everything from design through opening night support. “Our ability to manage both design and build results in economies and time savings that freed the client to dream big.”
The project launched with a performance by The Black Crowes. Since then, Legends Theater has hosted approximately 200 events annually.
“We architected a system that is completely self-contained but totally flexible,” Hutchinson says. “Artists get the full production toolkit they expect, Route 66 gets operational simplicity, and the venue delivers unforgettable experiences.”
Recognition and Results
The integration earned industry recognition when Commercial Integrator named the project “Best Casino Project” in its Integration Awards, announced at CEDIA Expo in September 2025. The awards celebrate integrations that “take the science of systems integration to the level of high art” and recognize projects that deliver immersive, awe-inspiring results.
